Practical strategies for students who think and learn differently – from the team at The Psych Professionals
At The Psych Professionals, we work closely with individuals who learn in unique and powerful ways. For neurodivergent students – whether living with ADHD, autism, or learning differences – traditional study methods may not always be effective. These five evidence-informed study habits are tailored to suit neurodiverse thinking patterns and support better focus, motivation, and retention.
Here are five study habits tailored for the neurodiverse brain, which can help enhance initiation and completion, focus, retention, and the overall learning experience.
1. Break tasks into manageable chunks
For many neurodiverse individuals, large tasks can feel overwhelming. Breaking assignments down into smaller, specific tasks can reduce anxiety and increase focus. Use checklists or visual aids to mark progress, providing a clear sense of accomplishment with each completed section. Checklists don’t need to be fancy—using different coloured Post-it notes can be a fun, colourful way to record and break down the required elements of your task. Not to mention, getting to cross them out and throw them away can feel pretty good.
2. Incorporate multi-sensory learning
Engaging multiple senses can enhance understanding and retention. Use a combination of visual aids (like diagrams or videos), auditory resources (such as podcasts or recorded lessons/lectures), and hands-on activities (like experiments or models) to cater to different learning styles and reinforce concepts. Understand how you best learn, and cater to this where possible.
3. Utilise structured environments
Create a dedicated study space that minimises distractions and is tailored for effective learning. Consider factors such as lighting, noise-cancelling headphones, or white noise to help create a more focused environment.
4. Implement timed study sessions
Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves studying for a set period—such as 25 minutes—followed by a short 5-minute break. This approach can help maintain focus and prevent burnout. During breaks, encourage the use of physical movement or relaxation strategies to recharge and reset.
5. Emphasise self-care and mindfulness
Encourage regular self-care practices such as deep breathing, mindfulness exercises, or short physical activities to help manage stress and anxiety. Ensuring adequate sleep, hydration, and nutrition can also significantly impact focus and cognitive function, creating a supportive foundation for effective studying.
By adopting these study habits, neurodiverse learners can find strategies that work best for them, leading to a more positive and productive learning experience.
