Jim Carrey on Overcoming Depression

No one is immune to depression, but with the right support it CAN be overcome

Jim Carrey has made a career out of making people laugh. Yet Carrey’s humour was born out of ‘desperation’ while growing up with an ailing mother and an unemployed father. To help make ends meet, he dropped out of high school and went to work full-time. Depression was a big battle for Carrey in his early life.

Jim Carrey has also been quoted as saying “I believe depression is legitimate. But I also believe that if you don’t exercise, eat nutritious food, get sunlight, get enough sleep, consume positive material, surround yourself with support, then you aren’t giving yourself a fighting chance.”

What is Jim Carrey’s psychological diagnosis?

2004 – 60 Minutes Interview – Depression and Spirituality

In this short 2-minute video, Jim Carrey reveals how important his spirituality is to his well-being.

Jim Carrey talks about being on Prozac for a long time and he had to get off at a certain point as he didn’t want to be on it indefinitely.
“There are peaks, there are valleys,” he said. “But they’re all kind of carved and smoothed out, and it feels like a low level of despair you live in. Where you’re not getting any answers, but you’re living okay. And you can smile at the office. You know? But it’s a low level of despair?”

These days, he relies on his spirituality to get him through the valleys.
You are either in a loving place or an unloving place.
He believes miracles will come true if you just believe in them

2024 – How to Overcome Depression

A lot of people think Jim is going through something and it’s a reaction to depression.
They say he’s dealt with depression his whole life.

He Says “there’s no hint of depression in my life whatsoever. Depression only happens when you don’t accept what is and when you are playing a character in life. So when I tried to go back and play Jim Carrey, I got depressed. Now I don’t try to do that anymore. Depression is your body saying F*uck You, I don’t want to be this character anymore. This avatar that you have created in the world is to much for me. You should think of the word as Deep Rest. Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character you’ve been trying to play. So what’s happening right now inside everybody is they’re going who am I and they’re depressed. Everybody walks around and they are going why am I depressed? Well, it’s because you are trying to be something for the world and as soon as you let that go better things happen.”
