Seeing a Psychologist Without a Referral
You don’t always need a referral from a GP or other medical professional to see a psychologist at The Psych Professionals. Private appointments are available at our Thornlands, Springwood, and Bracken Ridge practices, as well as via telehealth across Australia.

Private Psychologists and Counselling Services
Many clients choose to access psychological support privately, allowing them to book directly with a psychologist or therapist and begin therapy without needing a referral or any type of plan (e.g. Mental Health Treatment Plan).
Private appointments provide flexibility and allow you to access support when you need it, with no limitations on the number of sessions you can attend.
Can I claim a rebate for private psychology appointments?
Medicare rebates are not available for private psychology appointments.
However, you may be eligible to receive a rebate through your private health insurance under Extras cover. We recommend checking with your health fund to understand your available benefits and eligibility.
How is a private appointment different from a Mental Health Care Plan?
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is arranged through your GP and provides a limited number of Medicare-rebated sessions per calendar year. This requires a GP appointment and referral before you can begin. A private appointment skips that step entirely — you can book directly and start sooner — though Medicare rebates won’t apply. Many clients choose private appointments specifically for this flexibility, or to continue care once their MHCP sessions have been used.
What are other ways to access psychological support?
While many clients choose private appointments, there are also other pathways available depending on your circumstances, including:
Private Psychology appointments can be useful to supplement the above, if funding has been exhausted, allowing continuity of care.
